Salah satu hal yang perlu dipunyai kalau kita mau punya website adalah hosting. Hosting adalah rumah bagi website kita yang bisa kita isi macam-macam, analoginya adalah rumah/ruko didunia nyata. Biasanya kita menyewa hosting, bukan membelinya. Karena hosting butuh perawatan juga. DiInternet ada ratusan, mungkin ribuan jumlah hosting provider yang bisa kita langgani.
Bagaimana membedakan apakah sebuah hosting itu bagus atau tidak. Sebenarnya ada banyak faktor yang bisa membuat sebuah hosting bisa dinilai baik atau tidak. Berikut ini beberapa diantaranya:
1. Uptime.
Kurang lebih artinya, seberapa banyak waktu hosting ini tetap online. Biasanya dihitung dalam persen. 100% uptime artinya situs tidak pernah down samasekali. Biasanya sebuah hosting akan mencantumkan sekitar 99.5% uptime sampai 99.99% uptime. Perlu diketahui, kalau anda nemu yang 100% uptime, kemungkinan besar dia bohong. Nggak akan ada yang namanya 100% uptime.
2. Fasilitas.
Biasanya kita akan melihat fasilitas yang diperlukan sesuai dengan kebutuhan kita. Beberapa hal yang perlu diperhatikan antara lain:
- Apakah situs kita memakai php atau asp?
- Butuh berapa banyak database?
- Apakah perlu memakai cPanel (hosting manager program yang umum dipakai), atau kita bisa menerima tanpa cPanel (biasanya lebih murah)?
- Berapa bandwith yang diperlukan?
- Berapa diskspace yang diperlukan?
- Apakah ada fasilitas autoinstaller (seperti fantastico)?
3. Money Back Guarantee.
Yup, ini perlu karena kalau terjadi apa-apa kita bisa cancel dan uang kita dikembalikan 
4. Customer Service.
Carilah yang respon waktunya cepat. Ukuran cepat disini adalah kalau kita kirim email, dalam waktu beberapa jam atau menit sudah dibalas. Jika perlu, carilah yang ada fasilitas chat.
Itu cuma beberapa saja yang perlu dilihat. Sebenarnya kalau mau lebih teliti lagi, gunakan komentar pihak ketiga untuk melihat apakah hosting company yang akan kita sewa credible. Saya biasa memakai forum tentang hosting untuk keperluan ini. Biasanya kita mencari komplain yang ada, apakah komplain masih bisa diterima? Karena hampir nggak mungkin sebuah perusahaan hosting mempunyai pelanggan yang semuanya puas.
Oh ya, untuk saat ini saya memakai webhosting company luar negeri. Bukan apa-apa, karena dari awal saya kurang tau webhosting dalam negeri. Keuntungan memakai webhosting dalam negeri adalah pembayaran bisa dilakukan lewat transfer antar bank, sedangkan kalau yang luar butuh kartu kredit. Kalau situs anda akan dioptimasi untuk pembaca/customer international, sebaiknya pakailah webhosting luar negeri, tetapi kalau situsnya berbahasa indonesia, pakai aja webhosting inlander.

Memang benar sekali, semakin bagus harga belum tentu menunjukkan kinerja yang bagus. Tapi, biasanya begitu
Semakin mahal akan menambah fasilitas.
Dalam urusan hosting, semakin mahal hampir pasti fasilitas (bandwith, diskspace) akan bertambah, tapi pelayanan memang hal yang berbeda, setiap perusahaan memiliki standar pelayanan sendiri.
Kalau mau cari yang (super) murah, coba cari hosting dalam negeri, tapi fasilitas terbatas…

Baru tau ada yang namanya downtime, uptime. Web saya ngga bisa diakses selama seminggu ini. apa itu waktu yg terlalu lama atau biasa utk downtime?
Padahal aku dah bayar semua biaya utk hosting, tambah bandwidh dsb. Aku pake http://www.idwebhost.com utk hostingan ini. Kucoba hubungi terus selama 4 hari ini tapi belum online jg.
